HS notebook: LaSalle rolling along

by Roger Brown/

Two of the top boys lacrosse teams in Rhode Island met Monday when Division I LaSalle Academy (Providence) faced Division II Mt. Hope (Bristol), and the result showed just how wide the gap is between best team from each division.

Sophomore Michael Kemmy scored five goals as undefeated LaSalle handed Mt. Hope its first loss, 18-2, at LaSalle’s Cimini Stadium.

The Rams led 5-0 after one quarter, 13-0 at halftime and 15-0 before Mt. Hope got on the scoreboard with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The Rams, who are 10-0 against Division I competition, raised their overall record to 11-0.

“I don’t know if we didn’t get off the bus, they’re that good, we were too timid or we were looking ahead,” Mt. Hope coach Scot Clark told the Providence Journal. “I’m not sure. That (was) a shell of us out there. We were shy on offense and overly aggressive on defense.”

Mt. Hope dropped to 8-1 overall. The Huskies, who beat Division I North Kingstown earlier this season, are 7-0 in Division II.

Mt. Hope, which has 15 seniors on its roster, beat Mt. St. Charles for the Division II championship last season.
