The Boston Cannons will open their 2010 season against the team that ended their 2009 campaign.
The Cannons were 6-6 in 2009 and fell to the Denver Outlaws in the Major League Lacrosse semifinals.
Boston will play host to Denver on Saturday night at Harvard Stadium (7 p.m.) to kick off its 2010 season.
The Cannons finalized their roster earlier this week and enjoyed a strong training camp, according to head coach Bill Daye.
“Training camp went very well this year,” Daye said in a team press release. “It was the most competitive, intense training camp we’ve had in my tenure. We had to make some tough decisions, but we’re very excited about the team we have and are ready to work hard and get the season started against Denveron Saturday.”
The Cannons and Outlaws met three times in 2009 with each game decided by one goal.
One-goal losses were the norm for the Cannons as each of Boston’s setbacks in 2009 were by one goal.
Boston will be without 2009 Bud Light MLL MVP Paul Rabil for the opener. Rabil, who led MLL with 53 points last season, will be playing in the National Lacrosse League championship game for the Washington Stealth.
The Cannons will have Ryan Boyle in the lineup after the Orlando Titans were eliminated from the NLL playoffs. Boyle scored 12 goals with 23 assists in 12 games for the Cannons in 2009.
Kyle Turner will be in goal for Boston after playing in eight games last year and posting a goals-against average of 12.56, which was fourth in the league.
Turner and the Cannons defense will be tested by Denver, which averaged nearly 14 goals per game last season and returns much of its firepower.
The Outlaws will be led by Brendan Mundorf and Drew Westervelt, who combined for 90 points in 2009.
Westervelt led the team with 46 points on 27 goals (2 two-point goals) and 17 assists.
The Outlaws will also feature MLL Goaltender of the Year Jesse Schwartzman.
