HS notebook: Smooth sailing in Maine

by Roger Brown/

The marquee high school boys lacrosse program in Maine? It has to be Yarmouth.

The Clippers stretched their winning streak to 24 games by beating rival Cape Elizabeth 8-4 on Monday. The victory also stretched Yarmouth’s Class B record to 4-0 and its home unbeaten streak to 67 contests.

Back-to-back goals by Cape Elizabeth made it a 6-4 contest midway through the third quarter, but Yarmouth answered with fourth-quarter goals by David Dietz and Colby Shields.

“They’re the best team in the state right now, and you’ve got to knock them off in order to get respect,” Falmouth coach Mike LeBel told the Portland Press Herald following a loss to Yarmouth last week.

The Yarmouth/Cape Elizabeth game was a matchup of teams that have met in five of the last seven Class B state championship games. Yarmouthhas prevailed in three of those five contests: 2004, 2008 and 2009.

Yarmouth’s last home loss came in 2002, when it dropped a 16-6 decision to Cape Elizabeth. Since then the Clippers are 68-0-1 at home. The tie came against Kennebunk in 2002.

Yarmouth’s Stephen Petrovek, a senior attackman, led all scorers with five goals and two assists. Petrovek collected 56 goals and 35 assists last season.

Cape Elizabeth, which dropped to 2-2, received a team high three goals from Teddy Smith. The Capers are winless in their last six games against Yarmouth.

Girl power

The Winnacunnet (Hampton, N.H.) girls prevailed in a battle of unbeatens when they defeated Bishop Guertin (Nashua) 12-9 Monday.

Winnacunnet’s Julia McVane scored three goals in the victory, including the 100th of her high school career. Winnacunnet (6-0 in Division II) also received three-goal performances from Holly Linseman and Katie Duchany.

BG held a 7-3 lead, but McVane’s 100th goal tied the game with seven seconds to play in the first half. Winnacunnet also scored the first four goals of the second half. The loss dropped BG’s record to 7-1.

Winnacunnet will play at Bow – the only other unbeaten team in Division II – on Friday.

Duxbury suffers first loss

St. John’sPrep avenged a loss to Duxbury (Mass.) in last year’s Division I state title game by posting a 12-7 victory over the Dragons on Saturday. Both teams are now 11-1.

The Eagles scored eight unanswered goals to take a 9-1 first-half lead and held a 9-2 advantage at halftime.

St. John’s Prep ended Duxbury’s 99-game in-state winning streak during the regular season last spring. It was Duxbury’s first loss to a Massachusetts opponent since an 8-7 setback to Beverly in the 2003 Division I championship game.
