Cannons to play in Virginia Beach

by Staff Report/

Major League Lacrosse has announced that the Boston Cannons and the Chicago Machine will meet in a Week 6 matchup at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach on Sunday, June 20 at 2:30 p.m.

The announcement was made by MLL commissioner David Gross.

“Hometown Sports Management and the Virginia Beach Sportsplex are excited to welcome back and again host Major League Lacrosse,” said Chuck Thornton, Operating Partner for Hometown Sports Management. “As the home of the Virginia Beach Sharks and supporter of HR LAX, we look forward to this added partnership with MLL as a way to make the Virginia Beach Sportsplex the premier venue for lacrosse in the Hampton Roads market.”

This will be the second trip for the MLL to Virginia Beach, after the Chesapeake Bayhawks lost 17-12 to the then-reigning MLL champion Barrage at the Sportsplex in 2008. The Machine will play their entire 2010 regular season as a travel team with additional dates and locations to be announced in the coming weeks.

“Major League Lacrosse is excited to return to Virginia Beach after a very successful game here in 2008, and we’re happy to give area fans another chance to watch the best lacrosse players in the world,” added Gross. “We believe the area is underserved by pro sports and we will be using this event to further test our great game for potential future expansion in the region.”

The Virginia Beach Sportsplex is a multi-purpose stadium which opened in July 1998 and is operated and maintained by Hometown Sports Management.

Tickets for the event are just $20 and are available through Major League Lacrosse.
