UMass cooks at home against Hartford

AMHERST, Mass. — The UMass men's lacrosse team scored the most goals in a game in eight seasons as the Minutemen pounded Hartford, 20-10, on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
In the season's home opener, junior Ryan Hantverk scored a career-high four goals, and six Minutemen had multigoal games. UMass also tied its school record for man-up goals with six. The Minutemen improved to 2-0 overall and the Hawks fall to 0-1.
Senior captains Bobby Hayes and Ryan Smith each scored three goals in the win. For Smith, the goals were the first of his career. Hayes leads UMass with seven goals. Art Kell, Kyle Smith, and Anthony Biscardi each scored a pair.
Seven Minutemen had at least three points as Hantverk added two assists for a career-high six points. Hayes also had two helpers for a career-high five points. Will Manny scored a goal and added three assists for four points.
Hartford was led by Jared Franze, who had four goals. Justin Bearse had two goals and two assists.
UMass jumped out to a 5-0 lead just 6:34 into the game.
The six man-up goals equaled the mark set in 1999 vs. Fairfield and in 2005 at Johns Hopkins. Kyle Smith and Biscardi each scored two on EMO.
The last time the Minutemen scored 13 goals in a half was in a 21-9 victory at Rutgers on May 4, 2002. That was also the last time that UMass cracked the 20-goal barrier in a game, for its most goals in eight years.
UMass took a 13-7 lead into intermission as Hantverk tallied a first-half hat trick. Hayes, Kell, and Ryan Smith added two goals apiece to round out the multi-goal scorers for the Minutemen in the first 30 minutes of play. Adding single goals in the first half were Christian Hain, Biscardi, Will Manny, and Kyle Smith. Ryan and Kyle Smith notched their first career goals.
Franze had a hat trick to lead Hartford in the first half. Bearse also added two goals for the Hawks in the half.
UMass added seven goals in the second half, while holding Hartford to a three. The Minutemen had seven scorers in the second as Kyle Smith, Biscardi, Hayes, Hantverk, K.R. Jurgelevich, Ryan Liebel, and Ryan Smith all tallied. The goal for Jurgelevich was the first of his career.
UMass outshot the Hawks, 41-30, and had 38 ground balls to the Hawks' 23. Minuteman Tim McCormack had six saves. Freshman Steve Mahle played the fourth quarter and had two stops.
The Minutemen will be back in action this Saturday when the team travels to Ohio State to face the Buckeyes.
