Cannons obtain Ross from Toronto

by PR Wire Report/

The Cannons made their second trade in two weeks on Tuesday, acquiring midfielder Brad Ross from the Toronto Nationals. The Cannons gave up a third-round pick in the 2010 Collegiate Draft and the teams swapped second-round draft picks as part of the deal.

“Ross is very athletic midfielder that can get up and down the field,” said Cannons coach Bill Daye. “We like that he can play at both ends of the field and the move gives us another two-way midi that can be used in special situations.”

Ross, 24, was drafted by the Nationals in the second round (15th overall) of the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft. Ross played in three games in 2009, scoring two goals and collecting six ground balls. Both of the midfielder’s goals last season were scored July 23d against the Cannons.

Ross was a three-time USILA All-American at Duke University. He holds the NCAA record for career wins with 72 as a Blue Devil. While at Duke, Ross scored 76 goals and added 26 assists. He has ties to the Boston area as he is the assistant coach for the Brown University team.

The Cannons sent Toronto the ninth and 15th overall picks in the 2010 Draft while the Nationals sent the 12th pick to Boston with Ross.

“We were very high on Brad when we selected him 15th overall in the 2009 College Entry Draft,” said Nationals GM Stu Brown.  “Brad became a key part of our championship run once he got into the lineup late in the season. I believe that Brad will become a strong player in the MLL in the coming years. Boston approached us about acquiring Brad about 6 weeks ago, as an organization we are striving to build our franchise around homegrown talent, from the Ontario and Upstate New York areas. We feel that this deal allows us to open a midfield spot on the roster for some of our younger local players to audition for. We also feel that we got fair value for Brad in acquiring the ninth and 15th overall picks in the 2010 Collegiate Entry Draft."
