They met at Saint Anselm, majored in history at Saint Anselm and married at Saint Anselm. Steve and Kate Gaudreau, Class of 2003, love their school, and it is clear that the feeling is mutual.
In August, Steve was named coach of the men’s lacrosse team. In November, Kate was chosen to take over the women’s team on an interim basis.
The former Kate Maruszewski of Leominster, Mass., is the all-time leading field hockey scorer in Saint Anselm history despite the fact that she played in just two seasons, and she has coached the Hawks’ field hockey team for three seasons. Although she wasn’t a lacrosse player, she has coached the sport for several years.
“Kate is a great coach and role model for the young women of Saint Anselm,’’ says her husband. “As a fellow coach, I have learned so much from her.
“As the [women’s lacrosse] team’s defensive coordinator the last two years, she will provide stability to a program that was left in limbo. She has a great rapport with the kids, and I am confident that she can take them to the next level.’’
Steve Gaudreau, who hails from Nashua, N.H., returns to the Hilltop from Bow (N.H.) High School, where he directed the Falcons to three New Hampshire state championships. He also serves as the head coach of the N.H. Tomahawks U-19 Summer Elite Team.
Kate Gaudreau, who earned a master of arts degree in American history from Providence College in 2005, was an obvious choice for the Hawks when Christine Hodgdon resigned Nov. 2. She came to Saint Anselm from St. Bernard’s High in Fitchburg, Mass., where she was the varsity field hockey head coach.
“Having just been hired at the end of the summer, I am excited for the opportunity for Kate,’’ says Steve. “We understand what it means to be a student-athlete at Saint Anselm. It will make for a busy spring especially with our 15-month-old son [Paul] running around campus.’’
His wife concurs.
“I think right now what we are most famous for is our son, who is always on campus with us going to team dinners, practices, lifts, et cetera,’’ Kate says.
Of course, each spouse won’t hesitate to offer the other advice when possible.
“We have a great respect for each other and for the knowledge that each of us brings to the program,’’ says Kate. “Athletics are discussed on a day-to-day basis with us ... We recruit together, watch game film together — we are very involved and supportive of what the other one is doing.’’
Ryan Izzo ended his football career with Massachusetts high school records for scoring (722 points) and touchdowns (101). Walpole’s Izzo is bound for UMass-Amherst, where he’ll play lacrosse. ... Three Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse players, including freshman Zachari Triner of Marshfield, Mass., pleaded not guilty last month to sexually assaulting a female student in a dormitory room in November, the Connecticut Post reported. The three elected trials by jury. Triner also visited Hingham (Mass.) District Court in December to face a charge of assault and battery, the Patriot Ledger reported.
