Conspicuous by his absence at the Blazers’ camp for draft picks and free agents last weekend was Max Seibald, the team’s first-round pick in the National Lacrosse League draft two months ago.
Seibald led Cornell to the NCAA Division 1 championship game and won the Tewaaraton Trophy this year.
"At this point it does not look like Max is going to be coming to training camp,’’ coach Tom Ryan told ‘The Blazers Report with Chuck Jaffe.’ “I looks like he is choosing to hold out.
“We selected Max because we like the way he plays but we’re perfectly fine without him. If he chooses not to play, that’s his choice.’’
Last week, the Blazers formally announced the signings of a few key players, including last year’s stellar rookie Daryl Veltman, All-Star defenseman Mitch Belisle and local favorite Sean Morris. The Veltman and Belisle pacts were first reported in the November-December issue of the New England Lacrosse Journal.
Veltman joined the Blazers after being selected first overall in the 2008 draft. A graduate of Hobart College, Veltman was recognized twice as Rookie of the Week and once as Rookie of the Month for his outstanding offensive play.
Belisle is beginning his third season in the NLL after a standout year in Boston. Last season, Belisle led the Blazers defense with 104 loose balls and earned his first spot on the NLL’s All-Star Team.
Despite an early season injury, Morris sparked the Blazers’ offense in the second half of the season with eight goals and 16 assists. Morris, a native of Marshfield, Mass, is one of the city’s favorite players as also plays with the Boston Cannons.
“Veltman, Belisle, and Morris are integral members of the Blazers organization,” said president and general manager Doug Reffue. “We look forward to getting them back on the turf for what will surely be an exciting 2010 season.”
Reffue also announced the signings of three rookies, Mike Messina of Long Island University, Mike Stone of Wellesley, Mass., and Middlebury College, and Scott Kahoe of Syracuse University. The Blazers open their 2010 season Jan. 9 at TD Garden versus the Toronto Rock.
