Quinnipiac captures Connecticut Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team defeated Yale twice and also edged Fairfield to win the first annual Christian Prince Memorial Tournament for the Connecticut Cup Sunday. The Bobcats defeated Yale and Fairfield in round-robin play, before beating Yale in the championship match. All five Division 1 men’s lacrosse teams in the state – Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, and Yale – took part in the fall ball tournament.
“I’m proud of the team,” said Quinnipiac coach Eric Fekete. “It was a good team effort. They were clearly prepared and ready to go. We talked about this in July and August and I’m very pleased we were able to win this tournament against four very good teams.”
Ted Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.) scored in overtime to lift the Bobcats past Yale, 12-11, in the first round-robin game of the day. Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.) assisted on the goal. Quinnipiac earned another one-goal win against Fairfield to punch its ticket to the championship game.
The other four teams were deadlocked with 1-1 records through round-robin play, and Yale emerged from the tiebreaker games. But a rested Bobcats team was able to cruise to a 9-4 victory in the championship to earn the Connecticut Cup.
