Izzo chooses lacrosse and UMass
by Staff Report/
Ryan Izzo may have his sights set on the state career points and rushing yardage marks in football as he enters his senior season at Walpole (Mass.) High. Looking further ahead, Izzo intends to focus solely on lacrosse.
The midfielder recently made a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts. Izzo, a two-time Division 2 Player of the Year and a Super Bowl champ in football, scored 58 goals last season in leading the Rebels to the Division 2 state lacrosse title.
"I see myself enjoying (lacrosse) more in the future, but the experiences I got in high school were tremendous in both football and lacrosse, to win a Super Bowl and state championship in one season gives a lot of drive, hope and fun to both sports," Izzo told the Daily News Transcript of Dedham. "It’s hard to get away from one, and that’s what my biggest decision was – which (sport) I wanted to pick.''
Izzo separated his shoulder at a lacrosse camp this summer and might not be able to play in Walpole's football opener Sept. 11.
