Duxbury sour on Sweet?
by Staff Report/
Despite winning seven of the last eight Massachusetts Division 1 championships, Duxbury boys coach Chris Sweet was not offered a new contract for next season, according to a published report.
According to a July 21 story on the Duxbury Clipper website, two school committee members confirmed that they had been by school superintendent Sue Skeiber that Sweet's contract would not be renewed.
Sweet told the paper that he met with athletic director Thom Holdgate and principal Andrew Stephens for his annual coaching evaluation and was not given any reason to expect that he would not return. However, when asked about any potential problems with parents or boosters, Sweet seemed to be aware that there were some concerns.
“Any coach at any level of sports has to deal with a bunch of personnel issues and that can lead to hurt feelings,” he said. “There are always issues about playing time and things like that at every level. To say anything more specific would be inappropriate.”
Sweet said he had not been informed by the school that he was being let go, and he hopes to resolve the situation.
“I love coaching and, until the school indicates to me formally I won’t be back, I still hope to be coaching at Duxbury,” Sweet told the Clipper. “I love my job coaching at Duxbury and I believe the program is a model of how to tie in academics and athletics.”
